gir,
With reference to your despatch to the Foreign
Office No.479 (4/19C/1936) of the 4th May last, on the

to report that the first through train between Canton
and Hankow reached Wuchang at 6.30 p.m. on September
3rd, having left Canton at 11 p.m. on September 1st.
2. It is understood that a. the first through journey
was in the nature of a trial trip, the train was not run
at full speed, but it is hoped to reduce the running-
time considerably in future. The provis.onal schedule
calls for a forty hour journey between the two cities.
3. The formal inauguration ceremony is to be held on
October 10th, by which time it is hoped that the new
coaches ordered by the railway administration from
England will have arrived and will be put into use.
4.. The first south-bound through train left Fuchang
for Canton at 11.50 p.m. yesterday, Se tember 4th.
Trains will in future leave Canton and Hankow at 11p.m.
and 11.50 p.m. respectively every Tuesday and Friday.
